It had taken some string pulling, but Rafe got them in to see Billy Ray Anderson and he, in turn, was able to connect them with the deputy who’d first gone to investigate the death. The county coroner had also agreed to meet with them. Now, they were all assembled at the sheriff’s office on the square in town. The county seat was a typical small Southern town, with the old courthouse sitting in a green patch of lawn surrounded by small shops. Flocks of town folk meandered in and out of the stores, with some sitting on benches, shooting the breeze. There was even a group of old-timers who played dominoes under a huge old oak. None of it seemed friendly today. For the first time that he could ever remember, Rafe didn’t feel at home with these folks he’d known all of his life.

He was different.

Perhaps his time was running out.

“Now, what can we do for you, Miss Durand?” the overweight, round-faced sheriff asked. He stayed seated and seemed to get winded if he had to walk too far. “We gave you an audience because of our friend, Rafe, here. But to save my life I can’t figure out how you think this is any of your business.”

“I study wolves for a living. If a wolf killed your victim, I can verify that. If it was something else, I might be able to identify what it was.” She crossed her arms over her breasts and matched them gaze for gaze, refusing to back down. This was just too important.

“It was the wolf,” Billy Ray barked. “What else could it be?”

“There’s a cougar in these woods,” Rafe supplied. “I’ve seen her. She’s fully capable of taking down a man, especially if she felt threatened.”

“What was the condition of the body when you found it?” Karoline asked.

The deputy stepped forward, one hand on his hip. He had a friendly smile for Karo and didn’t try to hide the fact that he was checking her out. Rafe bristled. “Well, little lady, I can tell you the condition—he was torn up.”

“But was he eaten?” She pressed for an answer.

“No,” the coroner chimed in. “There were gashes and bite marks, but no flesh chunks were torn from the body. I’m taking impressions of the bite marks. And to tell you the truth, it doesn’t look canine to me.”

The constable and the sheriff turned to the coroner. “What are you talking about, Fred?”

Before the coroner could defend his position, Karoline fired another question. “How did you find the body? Was it lying out in the open or what?”

The sheriff looked disgusted and shook his head, but the deputy gave her the information she asked for. “The Abbots were walking their dog down by the lake and heard it barking wildly. When they went to inspect what the Shepherd had found, they discovered poor old Audrey. He was lying in a pile of brush, partially covered over with leaves.”

“Doesn’t sound like a wolf,” Karoline exclaimed. “That’s typical big cat behavior.
